Thasevi Food Roti Prata

Everytime when someone mentioned "Jalan Kayu", the first impression that comes to mind is... "ROTI PRATA"!

But since Picky Girlfriend and Fussy boyfriend are not too familiar with the area but yet craving for some prata, we decided to recce the place and see what we may chance upon. It was actually quite interesting to recce such places and Jalan Kayu seems to be quite an untouched treasure where there are still old shop houses operating, and even the floor tiles are the old mosaic tiles with a super nostalgic feeling!

There were crowds in a few prata stores so we decided to go with our gut feel and since the signboard claimed that it is the "Best awarded Roti Prata in Singapore", we decided to go with it!

Teh Tarik is a must order for us usually when it comes to eating prata :) The top of the drink was a little too foamy but we love the fact that the sugar level is just right and the tea was thick enough to satisfy the crave!

And after a short wait, our pratas arrived!

2 Kosongs (no egg) for Picky Girlfriend.

The prata was quite crispy on the outside and soft in the insider. And the best way (according to Picky Girlfriend) is to to dip the prata into the curry and topped it off with sugar! Super sinful but gave is another layer of sweet crunchiness, yummy! Also, judging from the oil stains on the plate, this is probably one of the few that we tried and is not too oily!

Fussy Boyfriend being a super egg lover ordered 2 egg prata in interestingly in 2 different forms.

His egg prata as well as a plaster prata! Not sure if you have heard of the plaster prata but essentially still a prata with egg, just that the egg was cooked differently, instead of mixing with the prata, it is similar to a sunny side up cook on top of the prata, so it looks like this!

and we really love this cos the taste of the egg is more apparent! Fussy Boyfriend loves his prata drenched with curry until it goes all soft together! And there is a surprise as you cut open the prata and if you are lucky some egg yolk will be oozing out :)

And being famished us, we ordered another mee goreng. It was nothing fantastic but sometimes all you need is comfort food and that little carbo fix so this dish was suitable, and comes with a sunny side up too! One thing that could be improved is actually the ketchup that is added on top of the cucumbers.

Picky girlfriend has tried some versions of the mee goreng where it comes with a home made sauce that is poured instead which is a good complement to the mee goreng.

Usually we will order mee hoon mee goreng (a mixture of vermicelli and noodles) which gave it an extra layer of texture that we love.

And since this place is opened 24 hours, it is an option for supper too! So many times of prata, so many eating methods, what do you prefer? :)

Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend's rating of prata: 3.5/5

Wan Dou Sek Dim Sum 揾到食 Part 3 of 3

And finally into the last part of our Wan Dou Sek dim sum hunt so we have the last 2 that we tried and are the highly recommended ones!

Chee Cheong Fan (rice rolls)

$3.5o per serving. Comes with filling such as shrimps, char siew, wild mushrooms and even crab meat ($4).

The chee cheong fan here is really quite unique as the sauce used is quite different from others that we've tried. For similar prawns/char siew chee cheong fan, light soya sauce are often used. For this, a thicker savory sauce is being used. Is hard to describe how it really tasted but both of us love the sauce so much that we wiped off not only the chee cheong fan, but the sauce as well!

The texture of the rice rolls is so soft and silky that it kinda felt that we were eating hor fan. The moment you put it in your mouth, it just melts! We ordered the one with shrimps and am glad to find that they are very fresh and crunchy. We love this! Will definitely try the other fillings next time we go there again.

Both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend Rating for Shrimp Chee Cheong Fan: 4/5

Another MUST order that we tried was this!

Seafood Noodle (ee-mian).

Seafood ee mian ($4/$6/$8) We order the smallest portion but that was already huge and more than enough for 2 person

You might be thinking "but this is not dim sum!!" Exactly! that's what we thought also. We didn't really expect that wan dou sek will also sell other things other than dim sum. But we tried this as we were afraid that dim sum may not be able to curb our hunger!

And we were surprised at how non dim-sum dishes tasted very yummy as well! The moment the seafood ee-mian was served, there was a strong fragrance of wine that lingered at the cover of the bowl before the cover was being taken away by the waiter.

A closer look at the noodles, has generous serving of prawns, crabmeat (Picky girlfriend's favourite) as well as vegetables. Noodles are very "Q" and makes a perfect dish once topped with crunchy anchovies! Interesting combination but very very yummy!

Both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend Rating for Seafood Ee Mian: 4/5

Wan Dou Sek Dim Sum 揾到食 Part 2 of 3

Now at Part 2 of Wan Dou Sek Dim Sum again (Sorry for the lack of post, but we were quite busy recently!). So back to the yummy food we tried, here's another one that we will recommend - Stewed Pork Bun or more commonly known as Kong Bak Bao which actually has braised pork belly slices wrapped in a bun.

$3 for 4 pieces

The moment it was served, the fragrance of the braised pork immediately filled our nostrils and we were really surprised cos the buns were much smaller than the usual kong bak bao. In fact looks more like a fun sized kong bak bao!

and fun sized kong bak bao really tasted much yummier and somehow felt less sinful ;)

Amazing lean fatty meat used (sounds contradicting, but is true! the fatty meat used was leaner than the rest! so is a healthier choice!)
. And just look at how thin the bun is!

And as we gave a bite to it, the taste was amazing as the meat was well braised and stewed to the right texture. Not too hard, not too soft. Just so right that the fatty portion of the meat would just melt in your mouth when you ate it. You can try pressing a little and you would be able to see the braised sauce seeping into the bun.

We totally love this! =)

Both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend Rating for Kong Bak Bao: 3.75/5

Another we tried is the lotus leaf glutinous rice (荷叶饭) which Picky Girlfriend has ordered as she really has a soft spot for such dishes.

Lotus leaf Glutinous Rice $3.50

Other than the main ingredient glutinous rice, there were also meat, mushroom and even peanut which was not so common in other versions we have tried before.

Every grain of the rice was covered and filled with the lotus leaf fragrance and was also less oily than what we have expected. Meat was also well marinated and mushroom was the kind that is thick and firm.

Worth trying it (though we would recommend going with other dishes as glutinous rice can be quite filling!)

Both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend Rating for Lotus Leaf Glutinous Rice: 3.25/5

Stay tune while we prepare the last part of Wan Dou Sek dim sum! :)

Wan Dou Sek Dim Sum 揾到食 Part 1 of 3

Both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend always have friends asking them where is a good place for dim sum so this time round we will recommend this place along Geylang which serves mouth watering dim sum! :)

This place! "揾到食" is usually pronounced in Cantonese as Wan Dou Sek
and interestingly the store is located at No.126 of the street so it really sounded the same!

The place is very traditional looking but don't be deceived by the outlook, this place has one of the most YUMMY dim sum we ever tried before. And even better, they operate 24hr so is a good place for late night owl who do not know where to head for supper!

Interesting signboards which reads "Hong Kong" and "Kowloon" in the air-conditioned section of the place

This was not the first time we ate there and without fail there would always be a loyal crowd there. We would also be spoilt for choice everytime we were presented with the menu!

So here's what we ordered, a must have for all dim sum meals!

Har Gao (Prawn dumplings) - $3 per serving

We love the Har Gao as it is important that prawns are fresh coupled with thin skin to go with. And this Har Gao definitely fits the bill with large crunchy prawns and skin that is thin enough that goes well with the har gao.

and the winner of this dim sum is the sweet chilli that makes everything even more delicious!

is an awesome combination! :)

The other must have at dim sum is siew mai

$3 for one serving and $3.50 if you order the prawn version of the siew mai

The siew mai tasted awesome as well. You can really taste the meat and how juicy it was the moment you savour it in your mouth. Dippin' the sweet chilli for extra flavour. Very yummy and we are certain that we will try the prawn version of the siew mai next time we go there to see what the difference is.

Both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend Rating for Har gao & Siew mai: 3.5/5

There were lots more that we tried and we will continue with Part 2 soon!

So stay tune! :)

Yan Kee Noodle House 炎记面家

This is our first visit to the Maxwell market to try some of the stores as we have heard of quite a few good food there.

There were already some stores which were closed, but fortunately we still managed to try some of the stores! Here's one that we'll recommend:

Yan Kee Noodle House

The bright display of the picture caught our attention so we decided to try the one with the biggest picture which happened to be their Specialty Dried Mee Sua. Essentially this is the same as other dry minced meat noodles but instead of the normal mee pok (flat noodles), mee sua (vermicelli) is used instead.

Specialty Dried Mee Sua ($3)

First take - generous serving of minced meat and topped with anchovies which we thought was quite an interesting combination.

The mee sua was very thin and soft and is definitely considered as a lighter version as compared to noodles when you are craving for minced meat noodles. The addition of the anchovies surprisingly made a good combination with the mee sua! Very crunchy and gave the food an extra layer of texure as the mee sua was not as chewy as other noodles. Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend really like this!

Give the mee sua a toss and mixed it well with chilli, tasted heavenly :)

Look at how big the anchovies are!

The chilli was also very fragrant and not too over powering. Fishballs are of the right size and very chewy and "q". Also without the fishy smelly that most fishballs have. There were other items sold in the store (minced meat noodles cost only $2 which is really very affordable!)

The store uncle was also very friendly and proud when he shared with us that the store is opened 24 hour, and even during Chinese New year!

Picky girlfriend's rating for Specialty mee sua: 3.75/5
Fussy Boyfriend's rating for Specialty mee sua: 3.5/5

Fei Fei Wanton Noodle 飞飞云吞面大王

Wanton Noodles is something that Fussy Boyfriend has a weakness for despite being a very "rice-person". We have heard quite alot about Fei Fei Wanton Noodle so decided to check it out!

We ordered both the soup based and dry version to see if there are any difference in both versions.

Soup version

Looking super ordinary, so we were thinking "what's the hoo-ha over this?". We tried the soup and it also tasted quite normal, with a strong egg noodle taste.

But the moment we tried the noodles, we knew why this Wanton Mee stands out from the rest. The noodles were incredibly smooth, and yes we are not exaggerating! incredibly smooth that you can just slurp the noodles like how advertisement does it effortlessly!

The texture is just amazing and we reckoned this was due to hand made noodles which is better than noodles that are machine made! The wanton also has a very thin skin that is almost translucent and the meat filling is fresh and tasty too.

Dry version

Not too pretty we thought on the way it was presented and where are all the char siew and wanton?

After mixing and tossing the chilli evenly and only to realise all the ingredients were beneath the noodles!

The chilli was very fragrant and goes well with the egg noodles and gave the noodle an extra oomph. The char siew was also sliced thinly and is something that Picky Girlfriend likes as compared to those chunky ones which are hard to chew.

delicious and springy noodles!

Price range $3 (small), $4 (big). Additional ingredients at $1

All ingredients required for a successful wanton mee! :)

Picky Girlfriend's Rating for wanton noodle: 4/5
Fussy Boyfriend's Rating for wanton noodle: 4.25/5
