Jai Thai Restaurant

Woohoo! If you are able to see this post, this means you are already viewing our blog with a new look!
Picky girlfriend is quite sick of how the old blog looks, so decided to change the colour theme as well as our collage header updated with yummy photos! :) Hope you like the change as much as we do! Meanwhile bear with us as our photos may appear bigger in some post and smaller in others, still trying to decide what photo size works best. So please feel free to give us feedback!

We managed to find another affordable and yummy Thai food! Headed for dinner for Picky Girlfriend's birthday since both of us had Thai food craving.

If you have been following our blog, we ordered the usuals (as usual!) - Green curry, tom yam and Phad thai! The basic items that determine Thai food will be a good gauge of the food :)

Thai Ice tea for Picky Girlfriend and Iced lemon tea for Fussy Boyfriend!

The top view of the Thai Iced tea, very "tarik!" and love the fact that it is not overly sweet unlike the others we have tried before. Tea taste is strong with the right amount of milk.

The dishes were served pretty quickly despite the huge crowd.

Green curry! $5, $7 and $10 option. We ordered the smallest portion.

Comes with generous servings of ingredients which Picky Girlfriend loves aka brinjal! Chicken thigh was also used so the meat is definitely tender :)

It's always a dilemma for us when we ordered green curry (that will go well with white rice) vs the wish to try other staples such as pineapple or olive rice! So we ended up ordering pineapple rice this time round.

The pineapple rice didn't fare as well as we thought it will be, was a little too soft for our liking.

But the kangkong really saved the day!  One of the few occasions where it's not the sambal version and yet we totally loved it! Was cooked with bean paste taste and you can taste that it was cooked over high fire (the cze char kind of 火候味). Yummy! So the kangkang sauce was a saver to go with the rice. Fussy boyfriend was really wiping the sauce off the plates! The only thing that thought was a pity was there was too much stalks instead of the leafy portion of the vegetables.

The phad thai on the other hand, was awesome! Q enough and our advice will always be to eat with lots of peanuts, chilli flakes and more importantly sugar! Yes, sugar! It actually gives the dish an additional level of crunch, which we were first introduced when dining at Bangkok. Not too sure why it's not common in the Thai restaurants here in Singapore

The last dish was the tom yam seafood soup. Usually we preferred the clear version (less sinful and yet deadly at the same time). And this soup proves us right. Normal looking yet sour and spicy at the same time. Can really feel the heat down the throat after drinking it! Great choice on a rainy day :)

Overall, good quality food at very affordable prices. We spent less than $30 for 2 pax! Very worth it. If you are interested in what other items they serve, you can refer to the website.

Both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend's overall rating for Thai Food: 4.25/5

Tom Yam Goong Thai Food

Still on the coupon frenzy, Picky Girlfriend bought another set of coupons for a Thai buffet meal! Thai food always never fails to attract, the spicy tom yam, tangy mango salad, flavoursome green curry are Picky Girlfriend's weakness!

Sometimes coupon website like this really offers quite alot of choices and so it's a good time to try things we have not tried before and at a discounted rate! Sale of coupon is always limited so do look out for yummy food deals here.

Sawat-Dee krup!

At first impression, the buffet spread offered was very similar to the Suan Thai buffet we have tried previously. A total of 26 items are available, with some items as a one time order at $18 is really quite a steal.

It was already quite late when we reached the restaurant for dinner (Probably close to 8.30pm) and the place was really crowded so it was lucky that we made prior reservation.

Under the buffet menu, ice lemon tea is also served free flow, and both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend really love this drink as it is very refreshing! And of course the "fire-saving" alternative for Fussy Boyfriend when he finds any of the food items too spicy ;)

Probably due to the crowd, it took a while before our orders were served and in between some orders were missed. But luckily the-very-shiok tom yam soup made up for it!

Dont be judged by the clear tom yam soup colour, it can be quite spicy! Definitely gives you the kick and drink it while it's hot! We also love the fact that all the prawns' intentines are cleaned up and are super crunchy!

Picky Girlfriend can't help but ordered another serving of tom yam soup! (tom yam prawn is a one time order, or you can still order tom yam soup with chicken - which taste the same with just a chance of the main ingredient).

This is another multiple orders which we had - Fish Fillet in 3 flavour sauce. A little sour, sweet and crispy, all the right combination which made the fish taste yummy!

Papaya salad we tried out of curiosity as this is really not the usual kind of dish we will order, and it was surprisingly good! Crunchy, sourish with a tinge of spicyness by the chilli padi really increased the appetite!

Other items we tried! Must try include green curry and pineapple rice. Raisins can be found in the pineapple rice which made it tastier! The pomelo salad was quite refreshing too.

There are actually more dishes we didnt manage to try since we weren't too hungry. For beef lovers, there are really quite a few options (can't rate the beef dishes cos both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend do not eat beef, so let us know if you have a chance to try it!). Full buffet list can be found here.

And more importantly it is Halal certified which gives another option for our Muslim friends! What other buffets do you know of that is Halal certified, let us know! :)

Suan Thai Restaurant Thai Buffet

It's the long weekend, how's everyone so far? Heading anywhere for yummy food? :)

Recently Picky Girlfriend is into purchasing online coupon deals (especially for food!), so we would be able to try something that we always heard and raved about at a discounted price!

And this time round, we bought a Thai buffet deal at BigDeals. It was really something new as both Picky girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend have not tried or even heard of Thai buffet previously so it was really a good chance for our food blog :)

Suan Thai Restaurant really has this rustic charm and traditional feel to it.

There were 28 dishes on the menu which was really enough to satisfy any thai food craving especially since some of the usual dishes (eg: Green curry and Tom Yam soup are refillable! Slurps!)

There was this counter where Free flow Thai salad were served.

Green Mango, Pomelo, Thai Payaya Salad

And also free flow tom yam and green curry. How cool! Both are Picky Girlfriend's favourite and her MUST haves while eating Thai food.

And you can add your ingredients too, love those mushrooms!

Green Curry is love! Goes really well with white rice or just on its own.

There were a few dishes on the menu that are subjected to one-time order only (the more popular dishes). And they will be served even before you even ordered them.

Some were quite nice like the below, Stuffed boneless chicken wing. We couldn't really make out what was used to stuff the wings, but it tasted yummy, especially when you dip with thai chilli sauce. And amazing how the bones were removed so every part is edible :)

Pandan Chicken

Tom yum with prawns. Served once but the tom yam soup is refillable at the main station. Soup was clear and with the right level of spicyness and sourness. One word - SHIOK and drinking hot soups like this really enhance your appetite (to continue eating other dishes! Especially important when eating buffet! =P)

All the dishes with prawns were pretty awesome, as they served huge prawns that were crunchy and fresh! And the meats were also well marinated.

Stir fried mixed seafood with Basil & long beans

The one-time order dishes were enough to fill us up, but of course we cannot resist the temptation to try and order other dishes too!

Deep fried fish with sweet and spicy sauce.

This is one we really love that we ordered twice. The fried fish is fresh and sweet & spicy really complements it. Even Fussy Boyfriend who can't really take spicy food loves it and keep taking 2nd servings :)

However the pineapple rice we had was a little too marshy for our liking.

Overall the food was really not bad, and satisfied both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend's Thai food craving with the unlimited serving of tom yam and green curry. It would have fared better if Phad Thai was included in the buffet.

And more importantly by purchasing the online coupon, it only costed us $18nett per pax including free flow lemon tea and pineapple rice which was topping up $1.99+ and $1.50+ respectively.

Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend's rating for Thai buffet: 3.75/5

Nakhon Kitchen (Serving Authentic Thai Food)

A relatively new place we spotted - Nakhon Kitchen which serves authentic Thai food. Always wanted to try this since the queue is perpetually long. Curiosity got the better of us so here we are joinng the queue as well!

Very packed! We had to queue for 15-20 mins before getting a table.

Since this is our first time here, so we ordered those items that we felt were a must try when it comes to Thai food! The menu wasn't that helpful since there were no pictures at all. The moment we saw the menu we knew the reason behind the long queues. Prices range from $5 onwards which was very affordable for Thai food!

So all relying on our instinct, we ordered the following:

Phad Thai ($5)

The glass noodles is of the right texture, neither too hard nor too soggy. This is also less oily as compared to others we have tried before. Healthier choice! Comes with tau kua, beansprouts and prawns which were quite fresh. Mix well with peanuts and chilli flakes to give the extra flavour to it!

Tips to eating Phad Thai, request for sugar! This is the authentic way of eating Phad Thai in Thailand and we tried it and loving it :)

Both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend's rating for Phad Thai: 3.25/5

Pineapple Fried Rice ($6)

Pineapple fried rice was really so-so. Has ingredients such as mixed peas, chinese sausages, raisins and prawns topped with pork floss which gave the rice a light sweetness. Overall there were too much sweetness to the rice and pineapple taste was evidently lacking in this dish.

Picky Girlfriend's Rating for Pineapple fried rice: 2.5/5
Fussy Boyfriend's Rating for Pineapple fried rice: 3/5

Tom Yam Clear Soup ($6)

This is really a MUST TRY for people who are fans of spicy food! Do not be deceived by the clear outlook, it is spicy and sour all at the same time!

Ingredients include various types of seafood such as prawns, fish, squid and mushroom. Picky Girlfriend loves this as the soup really gives you the kick (especially on rainy days). Fussy boyfriend however felt that the sweetness of the seafood has been covered by the spiciness of the soup.

Picky Girlfriend's Rating for Tom Yam Soup: 3.5/5
Fussy Boyfriend's Rating for Tom Yam Soup: 2.75/5

Pandan Chicken ($6)

The Pandan Chicken was rather tender but tasted more like satay chicken that overpowered the taste of this dish. The leaves were easy to remove which was probably why the chicken did not absorb the pandan fragrance well enough.

Sweet chilli dip save the day!

Sweet chilli dip managed to save the dish a little but the chicken has thick chicken skin that came together with it which was quite a turn off. Would have tasted better if skins are removed.

Picky Girlfriend's Rating for Pandan Chicken: 2.25/5
Fussy Boyfriend's Rating for Pandan Chicken: 2.75/5

Green curry ($8)

Another MUST TRY! The green curry has a strong fragrance of lemongrass and coconut. Texture is thick but yet very appetizing that you can eat on its own! A dish that will make you go" MMmmmmm!" :)

Main ingredients include long beans which are very crunchy, eggplant and chicken pieces.

Picky Girlfriend's Rating for Green Curry: 3.5/5
Fussy Boyfriend's Rating for Green Curry: 3/5

Red Ruby

Last one to end the post off for desert that we tried. Reb Ruby - simple desert with jackfruit and red rubies top with coconut milk and shaved ice. The red ruby was lacking crunchiness and the usual water chestnut taste and tasted more like jelly instead. Not worth the price paid for this. $3 for a bowl. Fussy Boyfriend was too full to try this!

Picky Girlfriend's Rating for Red Ruby: 1.75/5
