Tom Yam Goong Thai Food

Still on the coupon frenzy, Picky Girlfriend bought another set of coupons for a Thai buffet meal! Thai food always never fails to attract, the spicy tom yam, tangy mango salad, flavoursome green curry are Picky Girlfriend's weakness!

Sometimes coupon website like this really offers quite alot of choices and so it's a good time to try things we have not tried before and at a discounted rate! Sale of coupon is always limited so do look out for yummy food deals here.

Sawat-Dee krup!

At first impression, the buffet spread offered was very similar to the Suan Thai buffet we have tried previously. A total of 26 items are available, with some items as a one time order at $18 is really quite a steal.

It was already quite late when we reached the restaurant for dinner (Probably close to 8.30pm) and the place was really crowded so it was lucky that we made prior reservation.

Under the buffet menu, ice lemon tea is also served free flow, and both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend really love this drink as it is very refreshing! And of course the "fire-saving" alternative for Fussy Boyfriend when he finds any of the food items too spicy ;)

Probably due to the crowd, it took a while before our orders were served and in between some orders were missed. But luckily the-very-shiok tom yam soup made up for it!

Dont be judged by the clear tom yam soup colour, it can be quite spicy! Definitely gives you the kick and drink it while it's hot! We also love the fact that all the prawns' intentines are cleaned up and are super crunchy!

Picky Girlfriend can't help but ordered another serving of tom yam soup! (tom yam prawn is a one time order, or you can still order tom yam soup with chicken - which taste the same with just a chance of the main ingredient).

This is another multiple orders which we had - Fish Fillet in 3 flavour sauce. A little sour, sweet and crispy, all the right combination which made the fish taste yummy!

Papaya salad we tried out of curiosity as this is really not the usual kind of dish we will order, and it was surprisingly good! Crunchy, sourish with a tinge of spicyness by the chilli padi really increased the appetite!

Other items we tried! Must try include green curry and pineapple rice. Raisins can be found in the pineapple rice which made it tastier! The pomelo salad was quite refreshing too.

There are actually more dishes we didnt manage to try since we weren't too hungry. For beef lovers, there are really quite a few options (can't rate the beef dishes cos both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend do not eat beef, so let us know if you have a chance to try it!). Full buffet list can be found here.

And more importantly it is Halal certified which gives another option for our Muslim friends! What other buffets do you know of that is Halal certified, let us know! :)

Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend's rating for Thai buffet: 3.5/5

As-Shifaa Cafe Nasi Ayam

This post is long overdue since we Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend tried this before we even went for our Taiwan Trip! And as promised we will try to slot in local food together with the Taiwan food we have tried to you a variety of yummy food :)

This place is recommended by Fussy Boyfriend whose friend brought him here to try once and that's enough to get him hooked ever since!

Don't be deceived by the outlook of the store. Though small, business is really good. We were lucky to reach there early for lunch so still managed to get a seat. There were about 7-8 tabloes only, so be there early! Otherwise, most likely would have to take away.

The lady boss was also humorous enough to always respond to customers who complained there are always no tables, seems like alot of them are regular customers too!

Large pots of boiling oil to fry the chicken!

And after waiting for about 10-15 mins, food is finally ready.. and served. Choice of either drumstick or wings nasi ayam. And we chose the one with drumstick :)

First take - Looks really nice and we can't wait to try it! Come with sweet sambal chilli sauce and a bowl of soup.

$4, no difference between choice of chicken parts

The rice looks very normal but was really fragrant and not oily at all. Wait till you try the chicken and you will know why there is always constant queue there. Is SO crispy on the outside and the meat extremely tender.

Dip it with the sambal chicken sauce together with the kicap (Soy sauce) where you can find it placed on the table. The combination is simply heavenly!

MUST TRY! We spoke to the boss briefly and they have been in business for about 5 years and he claimed that this is the cheapest Nasi Ayam in town area. We are not sure whether we can find cheaper versions but for this price and quality, it is definitely worth trying!

Both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend Rating for Nasi Ayam: 4.25/5

Tips:
  • Ask for extra crumbs from the lady boss at no additional charges. The crumbs are fragrant and goes well with the rice

KFC Popcorn Shake

While passing by KFC today, we realised they have something new in their menu so decided to try this out. Believe many would have tried their popcorn chicken before but this is the shaker version.

Seems like a trend that fast food restaurants are into "shakes" nowadays! Fries first and now bite sized chicken. Wonder what will be next :)

KFC Popcorn Shake $3.30

Closer look after including the shaker powder.

Surprisingly, it wasn't as salty as we imagined it would be despite putting in all the powder in the given pack. The chicken did not seem to be able to 'hold' the powder and most ended up at the bottom which is probably the reason why it wasn't too salty.

Only slightly spicy and definitely a quick bite if you are craving for fried food and do not want to get your fingers dirty. And we like the fact that it is crispy on the outside and tender in the inside :)

And currently they have this promotion that allows you to purchase a cup of Nescafe Frappe at only $1 (Usual price $2.60) which both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend thought was quite a good deal though the taste was rather normal.

Tips:
With the pack size, is quite an ideal choice to "smuggle" into cinema (at your own risk of course!)

Both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend Rating for Popcorn Shake: 3/5

How to get there:
Available at all KFC Outlets (except Far East Square and Singapore Zoo)

Har Yassin Restaurant

Back at Geylang Serai again and this time round the place is getting crowded as there will be Hari Raya Bazaar set up at the area soon! Means lots of good food will there soon :)

Har Yassin and another restaurant selling similar food were located on the same street but we chose the former since is more crowded (that's how we determined good food sometimes!)

We were spoilt for choices as there were alot of different items available. So we ordered:

Mutton Murtabak
This is essentially something similar to prata but filled with minced mutton and onions and egg.

The prata crust is soft and chewy with generous serving of minced mutton. The use of onions also gave it an extra crunchiness and it seems to have lessen the gamey mutton smell that is present. Taste even better when dipped with the chicken curry gravy that was provided!

We bought the smallest size at $5 and the size was really quite huge for 2 person!

Picky Girlfriend's Rating for Murtabak: 3/5
Fussy Boyfriend's Rating for Murtabak: 3.25/5

Prata with egg and mushroom! (we ordered cheese with mushroom but unfortunately they had run out of cheese!)

Mushroom and egg Prata at $2.50

Once again another dish with onions which we did not expected it! This was really so-so as we have thought that they would have made the prata crispier. The prata was soft and had a strong egg smell.

Sometimes stores are making fanciful versions of prata (with different fillings) but both of us still prefer the plain (kosong) ones! Picky Girlfriend likes it with dipped with curry and sugar while Fussy boyfriend likes it soaked with curry!

Both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend's Rating for Mushroom and egg prata: 2.75/5

And lastly how can we miss out on Teh Tarik to go with? :)

Very fragrant and best drank while hot and you can sip the drink and have the bubbles as fake mustache. Would be better if the drink is less sweet but this is really just our own personal preference :)

Both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend's Rating for Teh Tarik: 3/5

Putu Piring

Finally something that we tried that is suitable for our muslim friends :)

Putu Piring!

This is a traditional Putu Piring store along Haig Road (a similar version is known as tutu kueh where you can find in most pasar malam). We were kinda lucky as the queue was shorter than expected and waiting time was only about 5-7mins!

All putu piring are freshly made on the spot and served together with small pieces of pandan leaf for fragrance and grated coconut.

The moment we opened up the wrapper, the pandan leaf aroma immediately surfaced! We halved the putu piring and surprised to find that the gula melaka filling was really oozing out!

Caution: Piping hot filling!

The white exterior really melts in your mouth the moment you eat it. Amazingly the flour after-taste wasn't very strong which is something Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend are very impressed with! Thin exterior coupled with generous gula melaka, very good match!

The store owner was really friendly that he even invited us to take pictures of how the putu piring are made after seeing us taking pictures of the food! :)

Hence we created the "The Putu Piring collage"!

Good quality putu piring at a super affordable price (3 pieces for $1 only)!

Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend's rating for Putu Piring: 4.25/5!
