We love JB: Restoran Shoon Huat 顺发肉骨茶 - Part 1/2

Hello everyone and we hope you are having a great holiday! Both Picky Girlfriend and Fussy Boyfriend love December as this is really the time to have a short getaway. So we would want to recommend going to... Johor Bahru (JB) for some yummilicious and really affordable food!

So on a random Wednesday, we headed to the well known Bak Kut Teh in JB which was recommend by Fussy Boyfriend's friends.

The place was a little run down but we were very sure that this is definitely a place where gems are kept! Just check out the crowd there (and is just a random Wednesday!)

The secret might lie behind the way it was cooked - over traditional stoves! Interestingly the stoves are located in front of the store so we were really welcomed by the strong aroma of the food. Definitely makes us hungry!

The price list looks like this. For a rough conversion - just divide the cost by 2 to get the cost in Sing dollars. Really very affordable :)

And the special thing about this store's Bak Kut Teh is that you can add on additional ingredients if you like at additional cost. But this is something which we have not seen locally. And the ingredients that you can add includes items like fish maw, Straw mushrooms, Pig's stomach etc!

So even when there were 4 of us who went, we order a 3-person portion for 4 and added some additional ingredients which was more than sufficient for all!

First take: Piping hot Bak Kut Teh that smells really good with generous serving of ingredients!

The soup has a strong herbal taste which was something different from what I have tasted locally. In our ordered claypot of Bak Kut Teh, the ingredients were really abundant! There were pork ribs, pork meatballs, pork liver, pig's stomach, pacific clams, fish maw, straw mushrooms, and button mushrooms.

Look at how clear and light the soup is!

And the best thing was the soup was refillable! Mad awesome!

Closer look at the ingredients

An important item that goes really well with the Bak Kut Teh soup is this!!

Fried youtiao! (the combination was so good that we can't help but ordered 2 more servings!).

And the trick to eating this? Soak the youtiao into the piping hot soup, but only for a while! this will allow the youtiao to absorb sufficient soup but still remain crispy on the outside! :)

Restoran Shoon Huat 顺发肉骨茶
11 Jalan Sutera 1, Taman Sentosa
Johor Bahru

How to get there:
Take 950 from Woodlands Interchange to JB City Square Mall. From there, take a cab and ask the Uncle to drop you off at Taman Sentosa (Negotiate the cab fare to RM7 or RM8)

*Update: Our reader Ying suggest to cab via meter instead and it will only cost RM5.5-RM6! Thanks for your suggestion Ying! :)

Part 2 to continue on another yummy food we tried in the same store and a must try beverage too! Stay tune! :)
